Accessibility
Here are some answers to some frequently asked questions about accessibility on the Gornergrat Railway and the surrounding area.
Yes, it is possible to access the Gornergrat in a wheelchair. Each train has low-floor cars that allow easy access for wheelchair users and their companions.
No, at least one coach is independently accessible on each train. You can plan and carry out your trip spontaneously.
Wheelchair access is possible at Riffelalp and Riffelberg stations. We recommend that you inform the staff in Zermatt of the station you would like to get off at so that they can help you get off. Wheelchair access is not possible at Legendär, Findelbach and Rotenboden stations. These stations also do not offer wheelchair-accessible paths or attractions.
You cannot travel around on the Gornergrat without any restrictions. But even from the station, you have a great view of the mountains. There is a wheelchair-accessible path from the station to the Kulmhotel on the Gornergrat. The interactive “ZOOOM the Matterhorn” exhibition is also accessible to wheelchair users.
Please note that the paths are not concrete and have a certain incline. They are also exposed to weather conditions and can be wet, snowy or icy. We advise you to check the current conditions on our webcam before your visit.
Yes, the Swiss ID card for disabled travellers (Companion Travelcard) can also be used on the Gornergrat Railway. Your companion can use this card to travel free of charge. All you need to do is buy a ticket for yourself and present the Companion Travelcard on site.
Yes, accompanying documents from abroad are generally also valid on the Gornergrat Railway, provided they were issued by an official body and meet the relevant international standards. All you need is a ticket for yourself and your companion can travel free of charge.
Unfortunately, there are no wheelchair-accessible hiking trails on the Gornergrat due to the steep paths and uneven surfaces. However, the interactive “ZOOOM the Matterhorn” exhibition and the restaurants on the Gornergrat are accessible to wheelchairs.
