Info point 1

Welcome to the Matterhorn View Trail

Welcome to the “Meet the Sheep” themed trail! We’re delighted that you’re taking part in this adventure.

On this themed trail, you will find eleven info points between the Gornergrat and Riffelberg that will provide you with lots of exciting information. You will learn all about the history of the Gornergrat Railway, discover interesting facts about the flora and fauna on the Gornergrat, and find out information about the Gorner Glacier and much more.

You are currently on the Gornergrat, 3,100 metres above sea level. According to records, the Gornergrat was first climbed in 1848 by the Englishman James David Forbes. But as early as 1579, the “Purenzunft” (farmers’ guild) regulated how the Alpine pastures on Riffelberg were used and when the sheep could be left on the “Gorneren”. It is therefore obvious that locals were using the Gornergrat before the middle of the 19th century for agricultural reasons. Over time and with the increase in tourism, the Matterhorn and thus the Gornergrat became increasingly well known.

Today, there are plenty of great, one-of-a-kind adventures to be experienced on the Gornergrat. For example, have you been to the interactive exhibition “ZOOOM the Matterhorn”? Here you can experience the Matterhorn and the surrounding mountains and glaciers up close from a distance using periscopes, immersive 3D cinema and paragliding. And don’t forget to take your personal souvenir photo at the Golden Spot photopoint with the Matterhorn in the background.
