Probably the best-known reflection in Lake Riffelsee

Just below Rotenboden station is a unique attraction – Lake Riffelsee. It is one of the largest and most beautiful reflections in the world and is something all visitors to Zermatt want to see. Many breathtaking pictures have already been taken here. Special moments are created at both dawn and dusk in particular – the top of the Matterhorn is bathed in red and the sky shines in a play of colours from violet to blue to golden sheen. The mountain lake lies at an altitude of 2,757 metres, is 100 metres long and 50 metres wide.

Lake Riffelsee was formed mainly at the end of the Ice Age and exists today mainly due to the melting of the glaciers and snow. Since it is a lake with no outflow, the water is retained until it finally evaporates. Due to its location, Lake Riffelsee is rather smooth. As it is dark and thus absorbs less light, the lake provides the perfect reflection of the Matterhorn.
