Suspension of bike transport

The decision to discontinue bike transport from 2025 was made for the following three reasons:

Service quality: The high number of passengers is making it increasingly difficult to offer enough seats. By discontinuing bike transport including the TranZBag, we can increase the seat capacity per train by 8% and at the same time improve the comfort for our passengers. Specifically, this means an hourly increase in capacity of 50 seats.

Unbundling: In the past, there have been many conflicts between hikers and bikers that often led to misunderstanding on both sides. With this clear separation, we will create a harmonious experience for hikers who want to enjoy the mountains in peace. The destination of Zermatt continues to have access to an extensive and diverse bike trail network. The Riffelberg FlowTrail is still accessible for bikers via the Riffelberg Express operated by Zermatt Bergbahnen AG (ZBAG).

Sustainability: The increasing congestion of tourist leisure routes has a negative impact on sensitive ecosystems and increases the ecological footprint in mountain regions. The considerable visitor traffic is particularly noticeable around Lake Riffelsee. In the Gornergrat-Riffelberg area, it is also apparent that marked trails are not always followed by bikers, which further exacerbates the problem. Our commitment to sustainability played a key role in this decision.

In order to make full use of the available space for seats and ensure a smooth ride for all passengers, we have decided to stop the transport of bikes in a TranZBag from 2025. Our decision follows the concept of a clear separation of hikers and bikers. In this way, we can create a harmonious experience for all passengers looking for peace and relaxation in the mountains.

The bike routes on the Gornergrat are still accessible, but can no longer be reached by Gornergrat Railway. These routes can still be accessed independently. Bikers can also continue to use the existing bike routes outside the Gornergrat area. The decision was made after careful verification and consideration of the interests of all users of the mountain region. We are aware that this means a change for bikers, but we are striving for sustainable and high-quality use of the region in the long term. In addition, a broad customer group welcomes this development, as previous usage has repeatedly caused conflicts and dissatisfaction.

We understand that the decision is not welcomed equally by all customer groups. However, bike transport has been discontinued in order to improve the quality of service, protect nature and offer all passengers, including locals, a high-quality mountain experience in the long term. The Gornergrat will also remain an attractive destination for hikers and nature lovers in the future.

Sustainability is a key component of our strategy. We will ensure that people are guided in such a way that the sensitive ecosystems of the mountain region are preserved. It is important to us that we use our resources carefully.
