Suspension of bike transport
No transport of bikes on the Gornergrat Railway from summer 2025
The Gornergrat Railway stands for high-quality, close to nature and easily accessible experiences in both the winter and summer seasons. This consistent strategic focus has proven its worth on our adventure mountain and the frequencies have steadily increased.
In order to improve the quality of service for passengers and increase the seat capacity per train, the Gornergrat Railway has decided to discontinue bike transport from the 2025 summer season. Transporting bikes in a TranZBag will also no longer be possible from then on.
An important aspect for the abolition of bike transport is the unbundling of hikers and bikers in the Gornergrat area. In the past, there have been repeated misunderstandings and conflicts between these groups. With the completion of the Blauherd Flow Trail, the current expansion of the biking infrastructure by the municipality of Zermatt is finalized. No further flow trails are planned in the Gornergrat area. The existing bike trail at Riffelberg will remain accessible via the Zermatt Bergbahnen facilities during the summer.
This step is a sensible move from the perspective of the Gornergrat Railway to ensure the best possible coexistence of all parties involved and aligns with the sustainability efforts of the BVZ Group. The aim is to reduce the burden on popular recreational trails and to promote the preservation of sensitive ecosystems, such as those around Lake Riffel. The decision is the result of a careful balance between customer needs and the strategic orientation of the Gornergrat Railway.
